PI of the European Research Council (ERC) project COSMOS: Computational Shaping and Modeling of Musical Structures, Elaine joined the STMS Laboratory in June 2019. She was previously Professor of Digital Media at Queen Mary University of London's School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science, where she was affiliated with the Centre for Digital Music. At QMUL, she founded the Music, Performance, and Expressivity Laboratory, and taught Music and Speech Modeling. Prior to that, she was a tenured Associate Professor at the University of Southern California's Viterbi School of Engineering (with courtesy appointment in the Thornton School of Music), where she was the inaugural awardee of the Viterbi Early Career Chair. At USC, she founded the Music Computation and Cognition Laboratory, was a Research Area Director of the Integrated Media Systems Centre, an NSF ERC (Engineering Research Center), and taught Computational Music Cognition.
Her research has been recognized by PECASE and NSF CAREER awards in the US, and fellowships at Harvard's Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, and received support from the ERC, EPSRC, AHRC, and NSF. She is an alum (Fellow) of the NAS Kavli Frontiers of Science Symposia and NAE Frontiers of Engineering Symposia for outstanding young scientists and engineers. She is author of numerous research papers and a recent Springer monograph; she is centre of one of 9 publication clusters having ≥ 5 women in the international music information retrieval community (2016 ISMIR infometric study). Elaine received her PhD and SM in Operations Research from MIT, BAS in Mathematical and Computational Sciences (honors) and Music Performance (distinction) from Stanford, and Fellowship and Licentiate diplomas in piano from Trinity College, London.
As a pianist, Elaine has been described as "an intelligent soloist at work, one with personality" (The Flying Inkpot), and "brilliant and versatile" and "a performer of elegance, taste and virtuosity" (David Deveau). She frequently designs and performs in concerts featuring music visualizations and compositions generated by software developed in her research team. Recent creations include MorpheuS AI music with Dorien Herremans and the Arrhythmia Suite. She has also worked with living composers to create and première new works, and has performed at Kunsthaus Stavanger's opening at the Lina Viste Grønli survey, the Prism Series at San Francisco's Center for New Music, London's Being Human Festival, the University of Sussex's Stockhausen Festival, and the Embassy Series in Washington DC. She has been featured in Los Angeles Philharmonic's Inside the Music, and recorded on Albany and Neuma Records.
