Les mercredis de STMS welcome Vincent Cusson, a doctoral student at UQAM (University of Quebec) invited by Jérôme Nika in the ISMM (Interaction Son musique Mouvement) of the laboratory. His research focuses on the design of a physical interface to facilitate interaction with an autonomous music agent in improvised music.

Abstract:
This presentation focuses on his doctoral research-creation project, with a particular emphasis on the eTu{d,b}e project. As a guest researcher invited by Jérôme Nika within the ISMM team (Interaction Sound Music Movement), I will continue my work this summer at IRCAM, exploring the design of physical interfaces that support human-machine co-creation in the context of musical improvisation.
This interdisciplinary project is based on the eTube, an instrument designed to investigate how autonomous digital musical agents can actively participate in a creative performance with a human improviser. The eTube is a newly developed augmented digital instrument, combining a plastic tube, a baritone saxophone mouthpiece, and a custom-built control interface designed to facilitate interaction and communication between a human performer and a computer-based agent.
This practice involves adapting existing computer-assisted improvisation systems, using machine listening, audio descriptor analysis, and sound corpora specifically designed to reflect our aesthetic and musical language.
Biography:
Vincent Cusson is an artist-researcher whose work explores generative, immersive, and interactive audio within interdisciplinary installations and performances. His practice focuses on human-machine co-creation in improvised music, and the development of new digital instruments (lutherie numérique). As a RIM, he collaborates with composers and ensembles across North America and Europe to investigate new forms of musical expression and live interaction.
